Art Therapy Thoughts

I’ve decided to do art therapy sporadically. Art is a way to communicate, and I want to be able to free my mind enough to process whatever it is I need to work through.

I honestly think all art is art therapy to some extent. It’s taking what’s internal and making it external. This is something I’ve tried to do my entire life because if I don’t have something in my literal vision, I tend to forget it exists. This includes parts of my personality, memories, things I like and don’t like…so I externalize everything I can. Art allows me to do that, especially now that I feel more capable of drawing what I feel.

When I do my sessions, I grab whatever I want to use and just sit and put marks on paper. I go in with absolutely no expectations and with no idea of what I want to create ahead of time.

Supply Thoughts

I used something besides Shuttle Art Tempura Paint Sticks only once, and that was in Pond Water, and I used Liquitex Acrylic Inks and Bombay India Inks during art therapy session 2.

This third session really solidified that I want to use tempura paint sticks almost exclusively as my art therapy session medium. I even got more brands and colors because I felt the 40 colors I had were lacking. There wasn’t even a neon yellow in the set, even though neon green, pink, and purple are included!

Tempura paint sticks are considered a children’s art supply, which makes sense. They are imprecise, non-toxic, easy to clean up, and dry relatively permanently and quickly and without a huge mess. They are also pretty opaque, which makes them more user-friendly. Makes sense they would help me find a sense of freedom and inspiration.

I also plan to use this medium just in my everyday life. They do a great job of giving me looser, more free marks. I necessarily can’t focus too much on details due to their size and way of application. I think they’ll be beneficial to inspiring more interesting art.

I am also interested in what I could do with other children’s art supplies.
