Who

Summary: This page holds all the information for my art piece “Who?”, including technical information about supplies and journaled thoughts.
Note: I’m marking this as “complete” because I am undecided about using color. I like it black and white but I may eventually color it. I will reopen this page if that happens.
Alien Owl

Meaning: This piece is primarily an exploration of this Stratified Layering style that I have fallen in love with. The spirals were an experiment to see if I could do it. The owl was determined after the initial outline, and represents the majesty of this technique.
Different movements based on position…
Looking at the owl from different angles will make the layers move different or appear more or less blurry, like an optical illusion. The effect is more prominent in-person.

Description
Finished: 05/17/26
Stratified layering that starts in the middle of the bottom and curves up, mirrored on both sides, essentially creating a double spiral that ultimately looks like a heart.
Process Notes
✵ Steps ✵
Planning Notes
- The main lines are going to spiral inward, sort of like a heart with the top bumps spiraling inward.
Progress Notes
- After drawing the main outline of the spirals, trying to make it into a heart, Hubby saw an owl, so I leaned into making an owl.
- As I progress through this piece, I notice that the pens I’m using have gotten flat and I’m being less careful about how thick the lines are. The right side and left side look difference (left side has thicker lines). I’ll try to even this out after I finish.
Completion Notes
- 05/21/26 - I finished inking this piece a few days ago. It was satisfying to make and looks stunning in letter. I am very unsure of if I want to color it or not. I could color it with alcohol marker and gesso the other side. Maybe I could use colored pencil. But I’m really thinking about leaving it black and white.
- I tried new strokes using the Stratified Layering technique. I added more circles or ovals and I tried to be more intentional a bout which lines were bold and which weren’t. I liked making the circle shapes as it added to the feather-like appearance of some of the layers.
- After finishing the line work, I found this picture of an owl that I thought looked exactly like the owl I was picturing in my head.

Supplies
| Material | What I Used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | Canson Graduate Mixed Media Sketchbook | Second piece finished in Doodle Bufonidae. |
| Pens & Inks | Pigma Microns - 0.3 | I used two pens that were already quite used and ended not only flattening the nib but almost running out of ink. Second half of art is darker than first. |
