All About Sketchbooks

Summary: I’m using this page as an index of all my sketchbooks from the past and present. Each section will take you to a brief description of the sketchbook series, along with links to all the sketchbooks in that series.
This page will be periodically updated.
Series
A sketchbook series categorizes sketchbooks by themes. I have several different series of sketchbooks, meaning I have several open sketchbooks at the same time. I generally only have one sketchbook of each series open. I try to end whatever sketchbook I’m working in before starting another in the same series.✵ Table of Contents ✵
Everyday Sketchbooks
These sketchbooks are my everyday sketchbook that I’ll use to practice my realism skills and also just to do some random fun art pieces. I primarily choose mixed-media books as having the range of dry to wet media is really nice. I’ll probably experiment a lot in various sketchbooks so I plan to keep trying new ones.
Sketchbook 1 - Unnamed
I don’t have this sketchbook published at all. It was the very first sketchbook I completed and was used more of a test for me to see if I could finish. It took a long time but it got completed. I may decide to put it online one day, but not today.
Sketchbook 2 - Sketchbook 2

The second sketchbook I’ve completed. It was a little larger than the first but used Ohuhu Double-Sided Marker Paper. I liked it a lot but the paper eventually got annoying to work with. I mean, it was always annoying, I just stopped ignoring it.
This was a great sketchbook to build up my confidence. It was small but with enough pages to feel free to make mistakes.
Sketchbook 3 - Thicc Boi

My currently open everyday sketchbook. This Thicc Boi is an Ohuhu Mixed Media Sketchbook that is even larger than the last and has more pages. Switching from the Ohuhu Double-Sided sketchbook felt like graduating. I’m a little intimidated by it but I’m excited to see how it goes.
Doodle Sketchbooks
These sketchbooks are designed for me to be able to doodle in with a lot of fine liner plus whatever else I want to use. These sketchbooks are primarily dry media but I prefer thicker paper for when i want to use ink or acrylic markers. There aren’t many (hardbound) sketchbooks I can use to doodle in, so at the moment, I’m just using Canson Graduate Mixed Media Paper and Sakura Pigma Microns.

While technically the third iteration of this series, it’s the first I hope to finish. The others were unfortunately destroyed. All are Canson Graduate Mixed Media Paper.
I wanted a sketchbook that would allow me to doodle. After trial and error, this book is primarily for dry doodles and dry media. I’ve been doing small art for awhile now, this larger book (the largest in my collection currently) takes longer to finish each page but the end result is SO stunning. My doodles look more stunning in large sizes.
Watercolor Journals
Wet media isn’t something I use often but when I do I tend to use a LOT of it at a time. I need paper than can handle that. A watercolor journal is something I often try to avoid because they can be expensive and very specialized, but if I want to use wet media like Bombay India Inks, Liquitex Acrylic Inks, or watercolor, I need a watercolor sketchbook.

I’m using the Flunbrato Watercolor Sketchbook, which has been excellent so far. I’ve primarily used it for various inks, but I want to do more acrylic paint in it. The paper is strong, very nice feel, and takes water very well. It has really inspired some colorful abstract art. I think I’ll end up using acrylic markers in both doodle sketchbooks.
Travel Sketchbook
These are small sketchbooks (usually around pocket size or B6) that I use when I travel and don’t want to bring anything else. Good for quick sketching without needing a lot of other tools.

Just like my unnamed, this series currently uses Mifuner Pocket Sketchbook. It has great paper and is small enough to fit in most bags. I didn’t like it for acrylic markers, so I gave it up as an everyday sketchbook, but it functions well for what I need.
Media Tester Sketchbook
This sketchbook series uses sketchbooks to test my various media together. Useful to have a place to put supplies to paper without feeling like I’m destroying other sketchbooks.

The Canson Mixed Media spiralbound sketchbook is a versatile, easy to use sketchbook, it handles most media fine and is cheap enough, with enough pages, to feel good about using it to test supplies. I don’t like spiral bound sketchbooks, but it works well with a media tester as it allows me to only have one page open at a time.
